abstract:flexibleandmodulartechnicalsolutionstoenergysupplyareimportantfactorsforthelong-termsuccessintheenergymarket.inthesesolutions,substationautomationsystemsplayamajorrole.thetechnicalrequirementsforthesesystemsareincreasinglyhigh,inparticularthedemandsonitscommunicationcapacity.nowadays,thecommunication,whichspansfromasubstationautomationsystemtothecontrolcentreandeventonetworksatenterpriselevelandofficelevel,isbecominganintegralpartofamodernpowersystem.

themarketisnowadayscharacterisedbyvendor-specificandhardware-orientedsolutions.asaresult,alargenumberofprotocolsforcommunicationexist,whichgenerallyleadtotheproblemthatdevicesfromdifferentmanufacturersorfromdifferentgenerationscannotcommunicatewitheachother.gatewayshavetraditionallybeenusedtoallowdevicesrunningondifferentprotocolstotalktoeachother,buttheycanadddelaysandintroduceerrorsinthecommunication.opennessofcommunicationviastandardisedinterfacesisdesirabletoachieveinteroperabilitywithoutgateways.thereductioninvarietyisbeneficialforbothvendorsandusers,andthisappliesbothtothedesignofnewswitchgearandtotheupgradingandextensionofexistingsystems.

thecommunicationstandardiec61850enablesinteroperabilityandprovidesthelife-cyclesupportoftheautomationsystem.throughthesplitofapplicationandcommunicationstack,andthroughthestandardisedpermittedextensionofthesupportedfunctions,thelong-termvalidityofthestandardisguaranteed.thisapproachsafeguardstheinvestmentoftheutilitiesagainsttechnologicalchangesinthecommunicationpartoftheautomationsystem.simplificationinmaintenanceandreductioninthetrainingofpersonnelareforeseen.furthermore,thesubstationconfigurationdescriptionlanguageofiec61850isthetoolfordescribingasubstationandthecommunicationofitsautomationsysteminastandardisedway.equipmentdataandconfigurationdatacanbeexchangedindependentofthemanufacturersinvolved.asaresult,thesystemconfigurationandsetting-upcostsbecomelower.

owingtotechnologicaladvancement,manufacturers’preferencesandgeographicalpreferences,alargeofnumberofcommunicationprotocolsexistinsubstationautomationsystems(sass).figure1showsatypicalsas.devicesfromdifferentmanufacturersordifferentgenerationsoftencannottalktoeachother.traditionally,gatewayshavebeenusedtoenabLEDevicesrunningondifferentprotocolstocommunicate.this‘solution’tointeroperabilityhasincurredhighexpendituresonoperationsandmaintenanceonthepartoftheutilities.manufacturersdevotemuchefforttomaintainthelife-cycleofproductsandtothedevelopmentofnewproducts.iec61850isbecomingthesinglecommunicationstandardintheworld,enablinginteroperabilitywithoutgatewaysandsafeguardingtheinvestmentoftheutilitiesagainstfuturetechnologicalchanges.

inmosttraditionalprotocolsforsubstationcommunications,alistofmessagestransferredbetweentwodevicesisdefined.toeachmessage,abinarywordisassigned.forexample,“opencircuitbreaker”maycorrespondtoaword“110101000…”.suchcodingisinflexiblebecauseextensionisdifficult.furthermore,itdoesnottieinwithmoderncommunicationtechniquesinwhichlow-levelbitsandbytesaretransparenttotheapplications.

iec61850standardisesthenameofthedataofautomationfunctions.ithasalistofstandardisednamesofalltheanticipatedfunctionscalledlogicalnodes.atthespecificationstageofasubstationautomationproject,ambiguityormisinterpretationisunlikelytoarisebetweentheconsultantandthetenderers.

3.4design
inthepast,thedatamodelsinthespecificationwereoftenmadesufficientlygeneralsothatawidevarietyofmanufacturerssupportingdifferentprotocolscouldtender.thestandardiseddatamodelsofiec61850areunderstoodbyallmanufacturersandcanbestatedinthespecification.thesemodelscanbecarriedforwarddirectlyintothedesignstage,savingtimeandreducingerrors.

aniec61850systemcanalsobebuiltupthroughgradualupgrade/replacementofexistingdevices,withoutwaitingforthesubstationtobeextended.thedeviceswouldbeupgradedbaybybay,andallwouldbecommunicatingthroughthestationunit.
5conclusionandoutlook
thebenefitsofthenowcompletestandardiec61850aretangibleinallareasofsubstationautomationandcompliantproductsarecommerciallyavailablein2004.thestandardisinuseamongutilities,consultantsandmanufacturers,andthefirstsystemsarenowbeinginstalled.theprincipleofstandardisingcommunicationhasalsoprovenitselftobefar-reaching.thecommoninformationmodelforthedatainthecontrolcentreisbeingreconciledwiththeiec61850datamodels,andthebenefitoftheutilitiesissmootherdataflowsbetweenthesubstationandthecontrolcentreinthefuture.
